Choosing the Right Stable Rug
The best stable rug for your horse depends on breed, the season, their clip, and how much time they spend indoors.
Cooler Months (Spring/Autumn):
Choose a lightweight stable rug (0g - 100g fill) to take the chill off without overheating your horse.
Winter Weather:
A mediumweight or heavyweight rug (250g–400g fill) helps retain warmth whilst stabled during colder spells.
Clipped or Sensitive Horses:
Clipped horses lose their natural insulation so opt for a heavier rug with soft lining and an integrated neck for full coverage.
Therapy & Recovery:
Try our Protechmasta stable rugs with infrared lining to support blood flow and muscle recovery during rest.

Stable Rugs FAQs
Do clipped horses need a stable rug?
Yes, in most cases. Clipped horses lose their natural insulation and struggle to regulate body temperature, particularly in colder months. However, every horse is different - factors like breed, age, body condition, and stable temperature all play a role. Monitor weather conditions and stable temperatures regularly to adjust rug weight before your horse becomes uncomfortable, rather than waiting for signs of being too hot or cold.
Can I use a turnout rug in the stable?
You can, but turnout rugs are designed for outdoor use and are typically waterproof. Stable rugs are softer, warmer, and more breathable - a better choice for indoor comfort.
Does a stable rug need to be waterproof?
No. Stable rugs are made for indoor use and don't need to be waterproof. This allows them to be more breathable and comfortable for your horse while stabled.
